From experimental results, it was concluded that radial cracks able to penetrate through thin strut walls of the channel morphology of pores in the biomorphous SiC are likely to contribute to material loss by brittle fracture [99,111]. The erosion-induced surface damage causes a pronounced strength degradation. Most importantly, the erosion rates of the biomorphous SiC ceramics were found to be significantly higher than for the monolithic SiC ceramics.

When assessing the leachability of glass-ceramics made with waste glass from crushed energy-saving lamps, Furlani et al. (2010) observed that the leached heavy metals concentrations of the resultant products were very low and decreased with increasing GC content. The authors explained that the low leachability is mainly due to the material’s microstructure, which consisted of a polycrystalline framework surrounded by a vitreous phase. In the Vickers test method, the indents must be positioned such that there is sufficient clearance from the specimen edge and between the individual indents. Ideally, the test force is increased from 0 to its final value within 7 seconds (minimisation of measurement uncertainty). The maximum permissible interval for application time from the standard is 2 to 8 seconds (nominal time duration 7 s). Generally, the dwell time for the test force is 10 to 15 seconds (nominal time duration 14 s). If the dwell time is any longer, the duration in seconds must also be specified in the hardness value, e.g.: 610 HV 10/30 (dwell time of 30 s). The selection of the load depends very much on the hardness of the work piece. The usual criterion is that the length of the diagonal should be of the order of at least 0.5 mm. It is therefore important that the Vickers hardness number is reported along with the load utilized. For example, the symbols HV5 and HV120 imply that the HV values have been obtained at loads of 5 and 120 kg, respectively. Further details on Vickers hardness testing can be obtained from ASTM standards E92 (1984).Vickers hardness (HV) measurements have been performed in SiC samples fabricated from various wood precursors (pine, beech, and eucalyptus) . It was found that hardness was highly dependent on the starting wood structure: a fully dense area corresponding to the wood growth rings and another that was mostly porous (porosity volume fraction between 30% and 50%). Hardness was found to increase with decreasing SiC/Si ratio. Solid-particle erosion studies were conducted on biomorphous SiSiC [111,112]. It was found that material loss occurred by brittle fracture involving the formation of both lateral and radial cracks . Erosion rates in terms of volume (ERV) were predicted from particle impact parameters and target material properties, based on the model of Wiederhorn and Lawn :Vickers hardness testing is reliable for measuring the hardness of a variety of metals and ceramic materials. Vickers hardness was measured on the S-T, L-T, and L-S planes of FSW-base in order to evaluate its mechanical anisotropy. Vickers hardness of DS-600-25-asweld, DS-600-100-asweld, DS-600-200-asweld, DS-600-100-anneal, was measured on the S-T plane at both the first and second welded zones of each sample in order to understand their tensile properties because the loading axis for the tensile test is parallel to the normal direction to S-T plane. Vickers hardness (plural Vickers hardnesses). The hardness of a material according to the Vickers hardness test, based on its ability to resist plastic deformation from a standard source In the Vickers hardness test, an optical method, the size of indentation (the diagonals) left by the indenter is measured. In contrast, the depth of indentation caused by the indenter is measured in the depth measurement methods (only Rockwell is standardised).
The Vickers hardness measurements were performed in air at room temperature under a constant loading condition using a load of 9.8 N for a holding time of 15 s. The hardness was measured at seven points on each specimen. The largest and smallest values were discarded, and then the average of the remaining five values was obtained for this evaluation. It is observed that the Vickers hardness is the highest for when the traverse number was N=10 among the different traverse number. One reason of this result can be due to the internal stress of the coating was decreased with increasing of the traverse numbers increasing. Another reason might be thought that the residual stress in the surface was increased as the traverse numbers increasing. The residual stress caused the Vickers Hardness of the coating lower.

Fig. 6.18 shows variation of Vickers hardness as a function of applied load in the load range 29.4–294 N for both graded A/CA6 and control samples. The results indicate that the dependence of hardness on load is quite evident for both samples, where the hardness decreases with increasing load. The decrease in hardness with load was also found in the in situ reaction sintering of A/CA6 composite (Asmi, 2001).Vickers hardness is determined similarly to Brinnell hardness. It is classified as a microhardness determination method and is the more common, compared to Knoop microhardness. This test also leaves only tiny indentations that are usually not a problem for production items, making it suitable for quality control. The other advantage of the Vickers system other than the increased degree of accuracy, is that it does not have a number of different scales and indenters, as does the Rockwell and Brinnell scales.

Vickers Hardness Calculator. Hardness is a measure of the resistance of a material to plastic deformation induced by applied forces. Some materials (e.g. metals, ceramics) are harder than others..
It is measured by forcing an indenter into the surface of the sample. It differs in that it uses a 136° square pyramid indenter, which produces a square indentation in the specimen, rather than a spherical or conical indenter, which Rockwell and Brinnell hardness techniques use. The square indenter is advantageous over the round indentations as the square indentations are easier to measure than the round impressions from spherical and conical indenters. Vickers Hardness Test. A hard metal point, called an indenter, is pressed into the surface of the material being tested with a measured force. Softer materials will produce a Figure 6.16. Completing a hardness test is a critical step in qualifying metal parts; these tests determine the various properties of a specific metal, such as resistance to wear, toughness, and formability Vickers hardness, a measure of the hardness of a material, calculated from the size of an impression produced under load by a pyramid-shaped diamond indenter. Devised in the 1920s by engineers at Vickers, Ltd., in the United Kingdom, the diamond pyramid hardness test, as it also became known, permitted the establishment of a continuous scale of comparable numbers that accurately reflected the wide range of hardnesses found in steels.
Donovan et al.46 used the Knoop hardness test to place diamond-shaped microindentations on welded beta-Ti specimens. These indentations served as a probe to investigate the effects of different welding conditions on the local mechanical properties in the joint areas and adjacent bulk metal. The Vickers hardness Hv, was measured at 5 points every distance of 20 μm. on a cross-section of TiN coatings. Fig. 4 shows Vickers hardness (Hv) from the surface side to the substrate side of the coating at the same traverse number and the different spraying distance. It was shown that the Vickers hardness of the coatings was in the range of Hv=1100–1450, the conditions of the coatings sprayed for the test were as follows: the power input P=25kW, traverse number N=10, 20, 30; spraying distance 1=60, 70 mm at the spaying time of about t=8s. These results show that the Vickers hardness value of the TiN coatings hardly changed in the range of the surface side to inner side of the coatings. However, the hardness value near to the surface side f the coatings became lower than those of other parts. The hardness is calculated by dividing the load by the surface area of the indentation, such that Vickers hardness is determined using the following formula:The recommended Vickers hardness range can be found in the standard (ISO 6507). Depending on the test force and specimen material used, The Vickers hardness value lies between 1 and 3.000 HV.The indenter employed in the Vickers test is a square-based pyramid whose opposite sides meet at the apex at an angle of 136°. The diamond is pressed into the surface of the material at loads ranging up to approximately 120 kilograms-force, and the size of the impression (usually no more than 0.5 mm) is measured with the aid of a calibrated microscope. The Vickers hardness measurement as a function of depth for the FGMs sample from the graded A/AT and A/CA6 layer to the homogeneous alumina layer was performed on the surface of the polished sample using Vickers indenter. Vickers hardness of graded A/AT composite was measured at depths of 0.52, 1.39, 1.60, 1.96, 2.20, and 2.43 mm with a load 3 kg. The Vickers hardness as a function of depth of graded A/AT composite is shown in Fig. 6.16. It is clear that the hardness increased with depth. This result is consistent with the results for AAT composites prepared by solid-state reaction where hardness decreased with an increase of AT content (Manurung, 2001). The highest hardness of ∼20 GPa was obtained at 2.2 mm depth which contains ∼8 wt% AT (Fig. 6.16). This value is higher than the hardness of AAT prepared by solid-state reaction (Manurung, 2001), which is of ∼11 GPa. This superior hardness is attributed to unique microstructure of this material. Skala (2000) also showed that the hardness of a graded A/AT system increased as the depth within the sample increased. Pratapa and Low (1998) and Asmi (2001) also reported the same behavior in graded AAT/zirconia and A/CA6 systems, respectively. 6. Vickers hardness is frequently measured to determine the resistance to deformation, densification and fracture of ceramics. Generally, it has been reported that the incorporation of GC results in an increase in Vickers hardness (Zhang and Liu, 2013; Zhang et al., 2011; Furlani et al., 2010) and may increase further with the addition of clay and kaolin (Furlani et al., 2011). The Vickers hardness test method consists of indenting the test material with a diamond indenter, in the form of a pyramid with a square base and an angle of 136 degrees between opposite faces..

The test forces used in the macro range in the Vickers method are mostly substantially smaller than those used in the Brinell method. The preferred choice for the macro range is 49, 98, 196, 294, 490 or 980 N, with 294 N being used most frequently for testing in practice. Fig. 6.17 shows the variation of Vickers hardness as a function of distance for the FGM sample, i.e., from infiltrated part (graded region –A/CA6) to noninfiltrated part (nongraded region—Al2O3) and average hardness for the control sample. Indentation was made at the distances approximately 1, 2.9, 4.2, 5.9, 7.6, 9.9, 12.3, 15.1, 17, and 18 mm. A load of 98 N was used to carry out this experiment. The plot illustrates the hardness markedly increased with increasing distance in the graded region and leveled out in the nongrade region. For example, at approximately 1 mm distance, the hardness of material is only 10.6 GPa, then markedly increased to 17.2 GPa at approximately 9.9 mm distance and steady increased then after. Both the increased hardness with distance in graded region and remains fairly constant in nongraded region are expected since the concentration of relatively soft CA6 decrease with distance as confirmed with XRD result (Asmi, 2001; Asmi and Low, 2014). The average hardness in nongraded region of 17.5 GPa is slightly lower than that of 17.8 GPa found for the control sample. Slightly difference presumably due to the presence of CA6 even in very small concentration, which according to the rule of mixtures, will have an adverse effect on the overall of hardness of the material at that point. However, assuming that no CA6 in nongraded region, the two sets of results (nongraded and control) obtained were in reasonable agreement.
