The 100 best British films of all time It is not usual for a Director to get back at his critics with a splendid film especially after being bashed down repeatedly for poorly received films. M Night Shyamalan’s career had its ups, downs and way too down’s in the past few years. But boy is he back! Split is Shyamalans revenge at dexterously owning our suspense nerves again. As usual, he uses his unique language to induce fear from the beginning and introduces us to a set of character, only this time they are all played by the same actor. James McAvoy delivers his career’s best in this dark and brooding story of a young man who is trapped inside a dozen personalities. The film reinvents the ‘multiple personality’ genre and delivers a stunning narrative that keeps us on the edge through out.

Horror Movies Watched in 2017 - IMD

It was a terrible year for real-life horrors, but 2017 was another great year for horror movies, which provided a cathartic escape from the relentlessly awful news cycle. Jordan Peele’s Get Out kicked off a strong year for the genre, which also included films ranging from surprisingly great to absolutely insane and low-key dreadful, and everything in between. It wasn’t too hard to choose the top 10 horror films of the year, but it was difficult to rank them beyond the number one pick. Just know that no matter where the movies land on this list, they’re all fantastic.Horror/comedies are among the toughest sub-genre to get right as tone can be a real pain in the ass for most filmmakers to wrangle, but this French gem blends the best elements of April Fools Day and Housebound into a highly enjoyable and frequently bloody romp. Just as impressive? For an ensemble horror movie it accomplishes the impossible by avoiding the presence of even a single unlikable character. Kevin has a dominant personality by the name Barry. Barry is the personality in charge of giving each personality its time to be in control. Barry denies Dennis and Patricia who are also Kevin’s personalities a chance to be in control. This is because of Dennis’ behaviour of disturbing underage girls and some undesirable traits of Patricia. The other reason for Barry doing this is because Dennis and Patricia worship the beast who is said to be Kevin’s 24th personality who is yet to appear. Kevin abducts three girls and it is assumed that Dennis has taken control from Barry. The girls now have to try and escape before the 24th personality appears. Point to note, there is a reason the 24th personality is called ‘The Beast’. This is a very thrilling, scary and confusing movie. 8. Annabelle: Creation

What’s not to love about The Lure, a Polish comedy-horror musical about killer mermaids that’s inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Little Mermaid”? OK, so maybe it isn’t for everyone, but if you’re willing to give yourself over to the madness of this bizarre little gem, you’re likely to fall hard for it. Silver (Marta Mazurek) and Golden (Michalina Olszańska) are two mermaids who emerge on land in 1980s Poland and join a rock band. When Silver develops feelings for her bandmate (Jakub Gierszal), Golden worries she will lose her sister forever. Oh, and Golden is also murdering people — just go with it. The Lure has so much to offer: an incredible ‘80s-inspired score, a unique take on the mermaid mythos, and some real body horror weirdness. As it reaches an ending that’s closer to the original fairy tale than Disney’s watered-down adaptation, The Lure proves equally interested in the poignant and the grotesque.Rape/revenge tales are rarely presented as attractively-shot daylight affairs, but that’s precisely what’s accomplished with Coralie Fargeat’s feature debut. She wisely avoids forcing viewers to witness the assault and instead focuses her film on the pursuit of the title. It’s gorgeous outdoor landscape offers a fantastic backdrop for the chase and vengeance. [Currently unavailable in the US]Get Out isn’t just the best horror film this year: It’s easily one of the best films of the year, period, and perhaps the defining movie of 2017. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut is an incredible success, both in terms of its impressive box-office numbers and critical adoration. It’s emerging as a major Oscar contender, a rare feat for horror, a genre that’s almost always overlooked. But putting aside all the buzz and adulation, not to mention an endless onslaught of think pieces, the fact remains that Get Out really is that good. In telling the story of a black man, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), who visits his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) family and uncovers a nefarious plot, Peele exposes the cultural anxieties and racial tensions that have always been there, but now, for many Americans, have never been more apparent. Like so many of the greatest horror films, Get Out is terrifying not in spite of its searing social commentary but because of the brutal truths therein. The reaction to 2017's horror movie slate has, bizarrely, been one of surprise. It's as if a year of impressive scary movies is somehow a rarity, when What is true, however, is that 2017 has been an uncommonly good year for the darker side of cinema. The mainstream corner of horror has produced.. Chris, a young black-American man, visits his white girlfriend's family estate. He becomes very curious as to the real reason for the invitation. At first, Chris thinks that the family is being overly accommodating in an attempt to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship. As the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. This movie has an unexpected turn of events that will leave you wondering what just happened.

Sometime after the group of friends are back home, the game appears to one of them who chooses dare. He fails to complete the dare and he dies. Olivia convinced that the game is real, gathers her friends to tell them. The game follows the order in which they played the game in Mexico. Failure to complete a dare or truth results in death. The group can only choose two truths and then the next person in line has to choose a dare. This movie is just horrifying to watch because of the dares that the demon who controls the game is giving them. 63. SHARES. Facebook Twitter. Horror movie fans don't have it easy and their love of horror franchises can be like being stuck in an abusive relationship. The first installment of any horror movie, the ones crystallized into the canon as classic anyhow..

6. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Oscar-winning horror fiend Guillermo del Toro produced this unsettling Spanish thriller, which sees a woman named Laura (Belén Rueda) return to Turkish cinema is having a moment, and this surreal horror gem by director Can Evrenol is a perfect example of why. What begins as a familiar cop movie.. Halloween always provides a good excuse to celebrate scary movies, but as anyone keen on the genre knows, it's never really a bad time to do that. Just a few months into 2017 and it was already a banner year for genre films, with Get Out becoming a cultural phenomenon, new horror festivals.. Harrowing is the most apt word to describe this grimly satisfying abduction tale from down under. Loosely based on a real event, it rubs viewers’ faces into the harsh and sleazy lives of a sadistic couple and the innocent teen they force into their home. More emotionally graphic than visually, it’s a painful and tense watch that manages the unlikely feat of also being beautifully-shot and highly satisfying. [Available on streaming]

Here are my Top 10 Best Horror Movies of 2017! Be sure to check out DrumDums an Bryan Lomax Movie Talk as they give their Top 10 as well.. With his debut feature The Loved Ones, Sean Byrne established himself as an exciting new voice in horror, unafraid to balance thrills with the darkest of dark humor. The Devil’s Candy is slightly more sincere than its predecessor, but its familiar evocation of heavy-metal devil worship is delivered with a wink. The Hellman family — husband Jesse (Ethan Embry), wife Astrid (Shiri Appleby), and daughter Zooey (Kiara Glasco) — move into a new home that just happens to be where troubled Ray Smilie (Pruitt Taylor Vince) brutally murdered his mother. And Ray hasn’t gone far: Hiding out at a motel nearby, he’s still serving the Devil, and he has his eye on Zooey. While there aren’t many twists and turns to the plot, Byrne’s distinctive style and his actors’ strong performances elevate the story. That a film about a Devil-worshipping killer still feels this fresh makes The Devil’s Candy all the more impressive. #15 of 30 The Best Horror Movies on Netflix #98 of 154 The Best Horror Movies of the 21st Century #25 of 33 The Best Horror Movies On Amazon Prime #1 of 33 Horror Movie Reboots No One Ever Asked For #3 of 20 Movies That Tried And Failed To Spawn Franchises #39 of 42 The All-Time Best Tom Cruise Movies

The 19 Best Horror Films Of 2017 BuzzFeed New

A bratty college girl wakes up in a strange boy’s dorm room on her birthday, does the shame-walk back to her sorority, and gets killed on her way to a rager that night. That sounds like the opening death in a slasher movie in which said bratty girl will never be heard from again, but in Happy Death Day, it keeps happening over and over and over again. Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) doesn’t know why she keeps dying and coming back, but she does come to the conclusion that if she wants to move on with her life — or at least see it mercifully end — she has to unmask her killer. In a lesser movie, this Groundhog Day premise could get tired real fast, but Happy Death Day is aware enough of its own absurdity to be in on the jokes, and willing to make them before you do. This movie is as sweet as it is mean, which adds up to lots of fun, and new face Rachel Matthews is flat-out excellent as the head bitch in charge of the sorority house. It also managed to rake in more than $100 million at the global box office, proving it’s a slasher you’ll want to keep revisiting — over and over and over again.Chris Peckover’s (Undocumented) smart, mean, and very funny home invasion film actually made the list last year too, but that was before it had distribution and was still under the title Safe Neighborhood. It’s such a craftily-designed little movie with strong characters and performances, wickedly fun story beats, and an underlying theme about the toxicity of male expectations. All that, plus homages to two 80s classics and it lands the perfect ending. [Buy it on Blu-ray from Amazon]Picking up four years after 2013’s Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky sees Nica (Fiona Dourif) now confined to a mental institution where she struggles to convince her doctors and fellow patients that it really was an evil doll who murdered her entire family. It’s tough to say with a straight face, and Cult of Chucky wisely injects a little bit of humor back into the Child’s Play franchise after the more straightforward horror of Curse. Over the course of nearly 30 years, Chucky’s creator Don Mancini has navigated the series from horror to comedy and back again — without ever resorting to an ill-advised reboot. The latest sequels are lower-budget than the theatrical releases that came before them, but they showcase Chucky’s endurance (he’s still voiced by the inimitable Brad Dourif) and Mancini’s ability to continue surprising his audience. The rewarding reappearance of Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) makes the case for this kind of drawn-out storytelling, rare in slasher movies.

  1. It’s pretty shitty of me to continue singing the praises of a movie that only played festivals this year and has to yet to secure distribution, but that’s a ridiculous situation for such an epic blast of genre fun. It’s a zom-com Christmas musical from Scotland, and its bloodletting, wit, and aurally-addictive songs deserve to be in the eyes and ears of people who love awesome things. Which should be everyone. 3. Quiet, atmospheric dread isn’t the tone everyone wants in their horror film (and that’s fair), but for fans of moodily-paced tales that simmer until they bubble over in blood, terror, and violence this is a movie guaranteed to check all your boxes. A deserted girls school during winter break is the setting, and the icy chill moves effortlessly from the screen to your veins as three young women finds themselves at the heart of something devilish and deadly. [Buy on Blu-ray from Amazon]

  5. Horror fans, it's time to rank the best horror movies of this year. Featuring action horror movies, psychological thrillers, and scary sci-fi films, 2017 horror movies gave audiences all kinds of scares. What is the best horror movie of 2017?

See actions taken by the people who manage and post content Here are the best horror movies of 2017 and what makes them so awesome (without any spoilers). It was the movie that cemented 2017 as a game-changer for horror (as it made a shit-ton of money, which will open the door for more big budget horror movies to get made in the forthcoming years) Writer/director Giddens Ko previously delivered the sweetly affecting coming of age tale, You Are the Apple of My Eye, but his latest shows him to be equally adept at exploring a far darker look at the pains of youth. There are mean and sad themes at work here, and the fact that it hits those bloody, nihilistic, and painfully honest beats while also being incredibly funny is something of a minor miracle. It’s a story featuring monsters, both human and otherwise, telling a tale of bullying, consequences, and accountability, and its ultimate observation devastates and haunts us long after the credits roll. [Currently unavailable in the US]Chucky is one of the classics when it comes to horror movies. Chucky ruined most of our perception when it comes to playing with dolls. The most famous line from the classic is "Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?" This playing doll was possessed by the soul of a serial killer. The Cult of Chucky is a follow-up to the sequence of the many Chucky movies. After Chucky murdered the family of Nica, she was institutionalized in an asylum for the criminally insane. Nica herself is convinced that she is the one that killed her own family and not Chucky. The Psychiatrist in that institution then introduces a new group therapy tool to help the victims get better and get over their fears. The new therapy tool is a doll and the psychiatrist names it “Good Guy doll”. Guess who the doll is? Yes, I know you all guessed it right, it is Chucky. Soon after the introduction of the doll, mysterious deaths start happening in the psychiatric hospital. Nica starts to think that she might actually not be as crazy as she thought. Chucky is then again faced with his nemesis from the original Child's Play, Andy who is now all grown-up. Andy goes to help Nica but to do so, he must also face Chucky’s long-ago bride- Tiffany. Tiffany is up for anything to help her doll achieve what needs to be done.

The 1980's birthed iconic horror movies that have stood the test of time and generated sequels and to the consternation of many reboots. We have all the horror shirts mentioned above as well as other John Carpenter movies and the cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space If you think the baby will escape from Killing Ground unharmed, you probably haven’t been paying much attention to new Australian horror. These films — Wolf Creek remains the best known — are relentlessly brutal and, more often than not, unbearably bleak: Even for seasoned horror fans, they can be difficult to endure, and Killing Ground is, indeed, a challenge to get through. That doesn’t mean it’s not a thrilling, compellingly watchable film — it just means you may never want to watch it again. The set-up is relatively straightforward, as Sam (Harriet Dyer) and Ian (Ian Meadows) pitch their tent on a secluded beach for a romantic weekend away. To say that things go awry would be something of an understatement. What makes Killing Ground so impressive is how much it does with a plot that, at least initially, feels so familiar. The violence is shocking, yes, but so is Damien Power’s ability to repeatedly subvert audience expectations.James McAvoy goes off the rails with a series of performances that can only be described as extra in M. Night Shyamalan’s clever thriller about three young women who are kidnapped by a man with dissociative identity disorder. Anya Taylor-Joy leads the trio as a misfit with a mysteriously traumatic past, which comes in handy in her bid for survival. Shyamalan’s film deftly examines how trauma is internalized and how it ignites internal evolution. Those experiences can create empathy, which becomes its own super-power of sorts, or they can fester and grow into something beyond our control. (Our review.)

LOGIN. Horror Movies. Filter. Film Type. All. Movies. TV - Series Although I’m still mourning the Cary Fukunaga adaptation that might have been, Andy Muschietti’s weirdly entertaining version of Stephen King’s horror classic (or half of it, anyway) is an exceptional consolation prize. Equal parts thrilling and hilarious, Muschietti’s IT follows a stellar ensemble of youngsters as they try to overcome their fears and defeat a supernatural evil that’s terrorizing their small Maine town. Bill Skarsgard is a deliciously demented Pennywise, tapping into something twisted and wonderfully self-aware that underscores the idea that the scariest thing of all isn’t some inhuman sewer clown, but the all-too-human people on the surface. (Our review.)Despite the occasional burst of graphic violence, The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a gorgeous film. This is writer-director Oz Perkins’ debut feature (although his ghost story I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House was released first) and it reflects an impressive confidence and attention to detail. The Blackcoat’s Daughter is actually two seemingly unconnected stories. In one, Rose (Lucy Boynton) and Kat (Kiernan Shipka) are the only students left at their Catholic boarding school over winter break as a demonic presence begins to manifest. In the other, Joan (Emma Roberts) is a hitchhiker on the run from a violent past. It doesn’t take long to figure out how the two halves of the film come together, but The Blackcoat’s Daughter is more concerned with its themes of loss and grief than with its plot. That’s not a mark against it — the style and mood here are so effective they end up telling the real story. The most chilling (and brilliant) horror films on Netflix UK. 13 Best Horror Movies of 2017

  1. With a two-and-a-half-hour run-time, A Cure for Wellness could be criticized for its indulgence, and there are certainly moments throughout when director Gore Verbinski might have exhibited some restraint. But part of what makes the film work is its sprawling nature, and the slow dread that builds along the way to its shocking reveals. Dane DeHaan stars as Lockhart, a young executive tasked with bringing home his company’s CEO, Roland Pembroke (Harry Groener), from a mysterious wellness spa in the Alps. After an accident renders Lockhart a patient, he becomes increasingly suspicious of the center and its head doctor, Heinrich Volmer (Jason Isaacs). There’s never any question that something is seriously amiss here, but like the best paranoid horror, A Cure for Wellness is deliberate in the way it teases out answers. And when it does veer into absurdity, DeHaan and Isaacs are so committed that they make it work.
  2. The movie is based on a series of best selling Halloween books. Two young boys wander off into a deserted house only to come across a book that nobody was supposed to find. When they open the book, and a dummy named Slappy appears. Slappy walks into the local Halloween shop and makes all the monsters and creatures of Halloween come to life. They cause mayhem and chaos all across the town. It is the duty of the boys and one of their big sister to stop everything before they go too far. It is a family movie as it is not too scary and you can tell the monsters are animated.
  3. Unlike the other mentions in the list, this film has its basic plot rooted amid an outbreak of a strange disease. The story revolves around 2 families who have secluded themselves from others in order to remain unaffected by the epidemic. This circumstance makes the film to naturally have characters with vague motives and that defines the reason why it is one of the best horror flicks of 2017. Arising from the instinctual need of a man to protect his family, the narrative flip flops between how he tries sheltering his dear ones and the strange happenings that surrounds his house. It can be watched as long as you enjoy mystery wrapped around in a bit of violence and gore.

Horror comedies are notoriously tricky to get right. The Best Horror Movies of 2019. The Newest Films to Rent at Home. Movie reviews. Roger's Greatest Movies Trey Edward Shults’ debut feature Krisha may not have been a horror film in the traditional sense, but it was made in the style of the genre and showcased Shults’ ability to ratchet up suspense in a confined space. It Comes at Night, which is unequivocally horror, takes the concept and runs with it. Once again, the action takes place almost entirely in a house, although here the threat is more life-or-death: a highly contagious virus that has already decimated the world’s population. Paul (Joel Edgerton), his wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo), and their son, Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), are surviving in isolation when a stranger arrives. Will (Christopher Abbott) has a family of his own — and they’re in need of shelter. It Comes at Night may be too slow for some, but its deliberate pacing allows the tension and paranoia to build, paving the way for an impressively brutal conclusion.A girl goes out with her rich boyfriend for an out of town retreat when things turn sour. The boyfriend deals in an illegal business of hunting wild animals. He has two hand men that help him with that. When they travel to the boyfriend’s mansion in the middle of nowhere, the four of them (including the two hand men) have a night of fun. The next morning, the boyfriend has to leave to attend to some pressing matters. One of his hand men takes advantage of her. When the boyfriend comes back, he deals with the situation all wrong and tries to kill the girlfriend by throwing her off the cliff. Luckily, the girl does not die and comes back for her revenge. This is a very bloody movie and is not recommended for a young audience.

Yorgos Lanthimos films, while critically lauded, can be divisive among audiences, and that’s to be expected. He embraces ambiguity and cultural taboos in a way that many might find frustrating or uncomfortable; his films are also, well, deeply fucking weird. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is perhaps Lanthimos’ most cringe-inducing movie yet, but it’s also unexpectedly his funniest. Colin Farrell stars as Steven Murphy, a heart surgeon who befriends a strange teenage boy, Martin (Barry Keoghan), with a secret agenda. Soon after, Steven’s son, Bob (Sunny Suljic), is paralyzed — and he’s told his daughter, Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and wife, Anna (Nicole Kidman), are next. Unless, that is, he’s willing to pick one to die. This is Sophie’s Choice as an absurdist horror-comedy, and it’s a stunning achievement. The scene in which Steven makes his choice is breathtaking in every way, equal parts hilarious and heart-stopping. Sean Byrne’s long-awaited follow-up to The Loved Ones actually made our 2015 list too based on the strength of its festival showings, but I’m including it again as it finally got a real release this year. It also just deserves the attention anyway for delivering a fast, suspenseful, thrill ride with characters we actually care about. The music is loud, the intensity is high, and it remains a killer flick. [Buy on Blu-ray from Amazon] HORROR films 2017 full movie english - Drag Me to Hell - American Scary Movie 2017. Ever since Annabelle appeared, the doll was begging for a solo installment and her fans were not disappointed when finally, the studios green lit the rag monster to unleash herself through Annabelle Creation. The film takes us along to the past where an ordinary family meets with a tragedy and how the affected members decides to resolve it by taking a step edging on the dark powers. Annabelle creation delivers a concrete back story which, if you are an ardent horror fan, must watch if you don’t want to be left out on details when the diabolic doll returns to screen.A plot that is cliché, a space encounter that is cliché, characters who don’t make much of an impact but a narrative that beheads anyone who dares call it cliché. That’s how splendid an experience ‘Life’ is. Looking at the premise and the way the film was marketed, one has to wonder if it was the idea of the makers to lower the expectations of the viewers and surprise them with a cinematic experience like never before once they had their eyes balls on the screen. Oh wait! there is this one little slimy smooth character you should know about. Yes, the film has the most visually comfortable alien ever. It doesn’t look one bit scary till it extends its jelly like tentacles and crushes your bones like wood powder. The film is a must watch for anyone who feels the need to say ‘hi’ to an extra terrestrial creature who cannot be compared to its predecessors in terms of its destructive capabilities.

2017 gave us not one, but two surprisingly good riffs on the Groundhog Day formula — both led by women who play mean girl-types that have to overcome their own crumminess to fight their way out of a time loop: Before I Fall (a poignant teen drama starring Zoey Deutch) and Happy Death Day, a slasher flick featuring an excellent performance from Jessica Rothe. The latter is thrilling, clever, and insanely fun, with enough self-awareness to make it a worthy throwback to ’80s classics.Although I’m still mourning the Cary Fukunaga adaptation that might have been, Andy Muschietti’s weirdly entertaining version of Stephen King’s horror classic (or half of it, anyway) is an exceptional consolation prize. Given how hit-or-miss Stephen King adaptations can be, it’s incredible that we got two great adaptations in one year — three if you count the TV series Mr. Mercedes. (And yes, there were some duds, but the less said about The Dark Tower and the TV show The Mist, the better.) It succeeds not just because it’s scary — there’s an ancient evil masquerading as an evil clown (Bill Skarsgård) murdering children, so duh, it’s frightening — but also because it’s a compelling coming-of-age story that features some of the finest child actor discoveries since, well, Stand By Me. Like that film, It raises the bar for Stephen King movies, and that’s a good thing. The film’s record-breaking box-office performance is also an encouraging reminder that there is a massive audience for these adaptations — and for well-made R-rated horror in general. So how about that sequel? We all have to agree that horror movies are not everyone’s cup of tea. This is not to mean that nobody loves them. Netflix's selection of horror movies spans a range of different sub-genres, ranging from old school classics like the supernatural Poltergeist and apocalyptic From Dusk Till Dawn to cheesy '90s teen slashers like I Know What You Did Last Summer. There are Korean zombies, haunted houses.. Australian director Sean Byrne’s long-awaited follow-up to his 2009 hit The Loved Ones is at once an ode to heavy metal, an endearing family drama, and a wonderful serial-killer movie rooted in a demonic-possession story. Ethan Embry plays a metalhead and aspiring artist, the head of a working-class family that’s struggling to make ends meet. They can’t resist buying a house on sale for a criminally low price, but the realtor neglected to tell them that the previous owners were killed by their son after the devil told him to do it. (To be fair, there’s hardly a box for that on Zillow.) The Devil’s Candy has plenty of thrashing guitar, an unexpectedly touching father-daughter dynamic, and eventually, lots and lots of fire.Mark Duplass’s charismatic serial killer returns in a sequel that manages to evoke and then surpass the original. Josef is now going by Aaron, the name of his victim in Creep, and he’s looking for another videographer. This time he’s ready to tell his real story — well, maybe. Aaron is a consistently unreliable narrator, and Duplass always plays it so straight that you want to believe him, even though you know he’s completely psychotic. The documentarian this time is Sara (Desiree Akhavan), who barely flinches when Aaron confesses to being a serial killer and seems completely unfazed by his repeated attempts to scare the shit out of her. In the first Creep, it took a while to learn Josef’s true nature — here, the jig is up. But Creep 2 is just as compelling as its predecessor, if not more so. The dynamic between Aaron and Sara is fascinating, and the tension comes from never knowing who’s in control — and realizing they’re not sure either. In general, the horror genre has been on a massive upward swing over the course of the last few years, and 2017 may represent the apex of that ascent. This year saw a ton of great scary movies debut on the silver screen (as well as a variety of outstanding streaming services), and we think that it..

Horror fans, it's time to rank the best horror movies of this year. Featuring action horror movies, psychological thrillers, and scary sci-fi films, 2017 horror movies gave audiences all kinds of scares. What is the best horror movie of 2017? Jordan Peele's horror. Mark Duplass and writer-director Patrick Brice have put together an excellent follow-up to their micro-budget Creep from 2014, in which Duplass plays an amiable serial killer who prefers to forge weird bonds of friendship with his victims before doing them in. This time, Desiree Akhavan plays a videographer on hand to film Duplass’s character (he’s changed his name from Josef to Aaron) as they spend a day together in a remote cabin. Creep 2 is tense and uncomfortable and features one of the best nude scenes of the year. It’s also a clever deconstruction of a serial-killer movie, powered by an extremely discomfiting performance from Duplass in fully scary mode — made even more disturbing as a foil for the steady, confident presence of Akhavan.Vote up the best horror movies of 2017 and feel free to add any 2017 horror movies missing from the list. Just know that no matter where the movies land on this list, they’re all fantastic. Remakes of classic horror can either completely reinvent the concept or hew too closely to the original and be deemed unnecessary. Krampus may be the most misunderstood horror film of 2015. There is just something creepy about asylums and mental health centers that seems to attract horror movie directors. This movie is about an ambitious young executive sent to get his company’s boss from a remote and mysterious “wellness center.” When he begins to unravel the retreat’s terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests there longing for the cure. James McAvoy goes off the rails with a series of performances that can only be described as extra in M. (Our review.)What is wrong in driving down to a secluded getaway home with your partner to relive your fantasies over the weekend? Nothing. Well that’s not how Netflix’s new spine chilling couple – horror speaks out. What starts out as a cozy weekend story quickly takes a U-turn engulfing us with such helplessness that it might not let us drive out to unfamiliar places in the name of adventure. A narrative that has a little bit of ’127 hours’ flavored around it (if they swapped the gender of the main lead that is), Gerald’s game is the quickest dose of cinematic experience that will leave us in a state of uncertainty and makes it creepier by feeding off on our psychological temperaments when met with a circumstance that assures death in plain sight. With Carla Gugino’s seamless performance, Gerald’s game shoulders a ‘one-woman crisis’ narrative in all its grace. The 'horror' sequences are few and far in between and don't really blend with the story, and the general air is that of a normal story set in Kochi, except for the Jewish connections. Horror fans can probably give it a single viewing but if you aren't a fan of the genre, you could skip this one Stephen King’s 1992 novel Gerald’s Game has long been considered unfilmable, and for good reason: The plot is confined to a bedroom where Jessie is handcuffed to the bed following her husband Gerald’s untimely demise. Enter Mike Flanagan, who took King’s intimate, restrained psychological thriller and turned it into one of the most dynamic horror films of the year. Carla Gugino does a lot of the heavy lifting: As Jessie, she has to play both helpless victim and resourceful survivor — and sometimes both at once, as Jessie hallucinates a more assertive version of herself to help her out of her predicament. It’s hard to talk about Gerald’s Game without talking about the scene, a moment of such shocking violence that you’re compelled to scream alongside Jessie. But it’s important to note that it works because of everything that comes before it: It’s astoundingly grotesque, but it’s also well-earned and cathartic. The first official teaser for It Comes at Night (above) could easily qualify for one of the eeriest things to hit movie screens this year. Trey Edward Shults’ follow-up to last year’s riveting drama Krisha is basically 2017’s The Witch, inspiring an irksome (and unnecessary) debate over whether or not it’s actually a horror film. It most certainly is. But the real terror of It Comes at Night isn’t in guts and gore or sinister slayings; it’s in the characters’ humanity or lack thereof. An exploration of grief and coping with the death of a loved one, It Comes at Night is a powerful exercise in dread, one that will linger with you long after the credits roll. (Our review.)

A narcissistic surgeon with a god complex (redundant, I know) squares off with a devilish teenage boy in the latest from Yorgos Lanthimos, which reunites the Greek filmmaker with The Lobster star Colin Farrell. Those who assumed Lanthimos might be going soft were sorely (perhaps even painfully) mistaken. To say much more about the film’s wildly unnerving machinations would spoil the, uh, fun of watching its wicked game unfold. In Lanthimos’ most deranged thriller yet, Farrell’s character and his toxic masculinity are more than deconstructed; they‘re brutally dismembered. I know this might seem as fun for most of you, but it is not. During her birthday she wakes up in a random guy’s room after a night of drinking and having fun with her friends. She goes on to do her normal activities of the day. At almost the end of the day, she is killed by a masked murderer. After she is killed, she wakes up in the random guy's room again. This day keeps repeating itself and every time she is murdered differently. Each day she wakes up weaker or feeling pain from how she died. Now she has to discover who her murderer is before she runs out of lives. I guess now reliving your birthday over and over again doesn’t sound so much fun anymore.

Jordan Peele’s “social thriller” became something of a well-deserved pop culture phenomenon this year, and part of its appeal rests in a horror story blending Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner with The Stepford Wives. It plays smartly with identity, value, and culture in fascinating ways while offering some jumps and murder along the way, and regardless of what label you apply it’s a fun, thrilling ride.
