What If Drake Covered Weezer’s Pinkerton? -- Vulture

By 2008, Cuomo had reconsidered the album, saying: "Pinkerton's great. It's super-deep, brave, and authentic. Listening to it, I can tell that I was really going for it when I wrote and recorded a lot of those songs."[88] In 2010, Bell told The Aquarian Weekly: "Pinkerton has definitely taken on a life of its own and became more successful and more accepted ... As an artist, you just have to do what you believe in at the time, whether it’s accepted or not. You just have to keep going with it."[89] In 2010, Weezer embarked on the Memories Tour, playing Blue and Pinkerton in their entirety.[90] Cuomo said of the tour: "The last time we played all of those [Pinkerton] songs, they went over like a lead balloon. And I just remember that feeling of just total rejection. And then to see 5,500 people singing along to every last word through every song on the album, even the really difficult ones, was incredibly validating for me."[90] Released September 24, 1996, Pinkerton is Weezer's second studio album. Named after B.F. Pinkerton of the opera Madama Butterfly, the album had a harsher sound than their original Blue.. In 2001, Weezer returned with the Green Album, with new bassist Mikey Welsh. With a more pop sound, and promoted by singles "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun", the album was a commercial success and received mostly positive reviews. After the Green Album tour, Welsh left the band and was replaced by current bassist Scott Shriner. Weezer's fourth album, Maladroit (2002), achieved mostly positive reviews, but weaker sales. Make Believe (2005) received mixed reviews, but its single "Beverly Hills" became Weezer's first single to top the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and the first to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. In December 2009, it was revealed that the band was no longer with Geffen Records. The band stated that new material would still be released, but the band members were unsure of the means, whether it be self-released, released online, or getting signed by another label.[69] Eventually, the band was signed to the independent label Epitaph.[70] Share on Twitter Share via Email Getting Up and Leaving: Weezer, before Matt Sharp’s (white t-shirt) left Photograph: Martyn Goodacre/Getty Images For Rivers Cuomo, Pinkerton – Weezer’s second album – was like getting too drunk at a party. Even five years after its 1996 release, the band’s frontman still had a hangover. Talking to Rolling Stone, he compared his experience of Pinkerton, which turns 20 on Saturday, to cathartically spilling your guts out and then waking up the next morning to realize “what a complete fool you made of yourself”.

Rolling Stone, ever the big successful jackass, called it the worst album of the year In April 2002, former bassist Matt Sharp sued the band, alleging, among several accusations, that he was owed money for cowriting several Weezer songs. The suit was later settled out of court.[38] Former bassist Matt Sharp started the Rentals in 1994. After releasing Return of the Rentals in 1995, Sharp went on to quit Weezer in 1998 to focus more on the Rentals. Sharp has also released work under his own name. Pinkerton. 10 faixas. Lançamento: 1996 Cuomo felt frustrated by the "limitations of rock". Every night after performing with Weezer, he would listen to Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly; the "depth of emotion and sadness and tragedy" inspired him to go further with his music.[6] By May 1996, Cuomo's songwriting had become "darker, more visceral and exposed, less playful", and the Songs from the Black Hole concept was abandoned.[7] Weezer's second album would instead feature songs written while Cuomo was at Harvard, chronicling his loneliness and frustration, or what Cuomo referred to as his "dark side".[2][8]

Pinkerton is named after the character BF Pinkerton from Madama Butterfly, who marries a Japanese woman named Butterfly.[30] Calling him an "asshole American sailor similar to a touring rock star", Cuomo felt the character was "the perfect symbol for the part of myself that I am trying to come to terms with on this album."[32] Other titles considered included Playboy and Diving into the Wreck (after a poem by Adrienne Rich).[32] Pinkerton est un album de Weezer. Initial reviews were mixed.[61][62] Jeff Gordinier of Entertainment Weekly deemed Pinkerton "a collection of get-down party anthems for agoraphobics" and criticized Weezer's choice to self-produce the album, which he felt resulted in a "sloppy and raw" aesthetic inferior to the pop sound of their debut.[53] In Rolling Stone, Rob O'Connor called Cuomo's songwriting "juvenile" and singled out "Tired of Sex" as "aimless". However, he praised "Butterfly" as "a real treat, a gentle acoustic number that recalls the vintage, heartbreaking beauty of Big Star ... suggesting that underneath the geekyteenager pose is an artist well on his way to maturity."[59] Rolling Stone readers voted the album the third worst of 1996.[63] Some listeners were perturbed by the sexual nature of the lyrics;[64] Melody Maker praised Pinkerton's music, but advised listeners "to ignore the lyrics entirely."[65] Cuomo moved to Santa Monica and recorded dozens of demos, including future Weezer songs "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" and "Undone – The Sweater Song". Sharp was enthusiastic about the demos, and accepted Cuomo and Wilson's invitation to play with them; he became the group's bassist and de facto manager.[6] During Cuomo's 1996 spring break, Weezer regrouped at Sound City Studios and recorded "The Good Life", "Across the Sea" and "Falling for You", before Cuomo returned to Harvard for his university finals.[16] They completed Pinkerton in mid-1996 in Los Angeles. Two additional tracks, "I Swear It's True" and "Getting Up and Leaving", were abandoned prior to mixing.[17] UK record labels association the BPI administers and certifies the iconic BRIT Certified Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards Programme. Weezer's second album, Pinkerton, was released on September 24, 1996.[26] It produced three singles: "El Scorcho", "The Good Life", and "Pink Triangle".[27][28][29] In addition to a lawsuit filed against the band over the title of the album,[30] Pinkerton sold poorly compared to the Blue Album,[31] perhaps due to its darker, more abrasive sound,[26] and it was voted "one of the worst albums of 1996" in a Rolling Stone reader poll.[32] However, the album eventually came to be considered among Weezer's best work;[33][34] in 2002, Rolling Stone readers voted Pinkerton the 16th greatest album of all time,[35] and it has been listed in several critics' "best albums of all time" lists.[36]

My hindu, zen, kyokushin, self-denial, self-abnegation, no-emotion, cool-faced side versus my Italian-American heavy metal side."[34] The songs are mostly sequenced in the order in which he wrote them, and so "the album kind of tells the story of my struggle with my inner Pinkerton".[35] Weezer began working on its ninth studio album in September 2010 with the intent of a 2011 release,[83] but the year ended without seeing a release. Formation and first years (1989–1994)edit

Pinkerton is the second studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on September 24, 1996 by DGC Records. After abandoning plans for a rock opera entitled Songs from the Black Hole, Weezer recorded the album between songwriter Rivers Cuomo's terms at Harvard University, where he wrote most of the songs. When I discovered Pinkerton in high school, Cuomo’s cliched, emotional frankness didn’t repulse me. At 15 years old, it was exactly what I craved from music. I was there for his self-indulgence because it so perfectly reflected mine. Feelings scared me (Falling For You); I was also afraid of rejection (Pink Triangle). And I wanted desperately to be Tired of Sex because I thought that was cool. Details aside, I shared with Cuomo a need to express my emotions. Similarly, I didn’t seem to care if they were lame, completely un-self-aware, or even offensive. Weezer - Pinkerton. 12min | Short, Comedy, Music | Episode aired 24 May 2016 Jonze also directed Weezer's second video, "Buddy Holly",[12] splicing the band with footage from the 1970s television sitcom Happy Days.[15] The video achieved heavy rotation on MTV[16] and went on to win four MTV Video Music Awards, including Breakthrough Video and Best Alternative Music Video, and two Billboard Music Video Awards.[17] The video was also featured on the companion CD for the Windows 95 operating system.[18][19] A third single, "Say It Ain't So", followed. Weezer is certified quadruple platinum in the United States as well as Canada, making it Weezer's best-selling album.[20][21] At the very least, there's a sense of closure in the simultaneous release of Pinkerton and Death to False Metal: For the past decade, new Weezer albums have been unfavorably judged relative to Pinkerton, and hey, we finally get to do it in real time. But there's always been an underlying unease that, at least in more indie-leaning circles, we're becoming every bit as susceptible to the generation gap that led to the dismissal of Pinkerton in the first place. Even if Weezer were able to come up with something as potent as Pinkerton, would we recognize it?

The "Blue Album" (1994)edit

In 1994, Weezer took a break from touring for the Christmas holidays.[22] Cuomo traveled to his home state of Connecticut and began recording demos for Weezer's next album. His original concept was a space-themed rock opera, Songs from the Black Hole, that would express his mixed feelings about success.[23] Weezer developed the concept through intermittent recording sessions through 1995.[24] At the end of the year, Cuomo enrolled at Harvard University, where his songwriting became "darker, more visceral and exposed, less playful", and the Songs from the Black Hole album was abandoned.[25] In 1994, after the multi-platinum success of Weezer's self-titled debut album, Weezer took a break from touring for the Christmas holidays.[1] In his home state of Connecticut, songwriter Rivers Cuomo began preparing material for Weezer's next album using an 8-track recorder.[2] His original concept was a science fiction rock opera, Songs from the Black Hole, that expressed his mixed feelings about success.[2] Weezer developed Songs from the Black Hole through intermittent recording sessions throughout 1995.[3] 위저(Weezer)는 1992년 얼터너티브 열풍을 타고 기타 중심의 록에 대해 다시 관심이 집중되었을 무렵 미국 캘리포니아 주 로스 앤젤레스에서 결성된 록 밴드이다. 2018년까지 11장의 정규 앨범, 6장의 EP.. The supposedly juvenile feelings of Pinkerton still pack visceral power years after listeners would've supposedly outgrown them. It's a record that reaches well beyond a diaristic look at Cuomo's perversions, and instead asks something more universal: Do we really grow out of our teenage feelings, or do we need something like Pinkerton to expose them as merely being repressed to the point where they mutate? It's heavy stuff, and in the manner of Violent Femmes, you can argue about the sexual politics, the late-career parody, or the total uncoolness of it in retrospect, but even if Pinkerton is ultimately an album that gets one single shot at you, the mark it leaves is indelible. weezer的第二张专辑,AMG五星评价,吐血推荐,90年代最佳专辑之一. 《Pinkerton》是我最喜欢的专辑; 所谓好专辑,就是适合自己的,无论何时何地何种心情,都可以反.. Pinkerton features a darker, more abrasive sound than Weezer's debut.[18][19] Writing from a more direct and personal perspective,[20] Cuomo wrote of his dysfunctional relationships, sexual frustration, and struggles with identity.[13][21][22][23][24] The album charts his "cycle between 'lame-o and partier'."[25] At just under thirty-five minutes, Pinkerton is, according to Cuomo, "short by design."[13] Critics have described the album as a mixture of genres including alternative rock,[26] emo,[27][28] power pop,[18] and pop punk.[29]

Their first show was on 19 March 1992, closing for Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar.[6] They took their name from a nickname Cuomo's father gave him.[6] Cuomo gave Sharp one year to get the band a record deal before Cuomo accepted a scholarship at UC-Berkeley.[6] In November, Weezer recorded a demo, The Kitchen Tape, including a version of the future Weezer single "Say It Ain't So".[6] The demo was heard by Todd Sullivan, an A&R man at Geffen Records, who signed them in June 1993.[6] And yet because of all of this emotional baggage, the cathartic power of Pinkerton is second to none. While it's often compared to the Blue Album, Pinkerton bears more similarity to In Utero, a record that also mixed relatively raw alt-rock production, undeniable pop smarts, and a lead singer absolutely freaked the fuck out by fame. But while many sickeningly thought Kurt Cobain's suicide somehow validated his art, Cuomo's self-destruction was more quotidian and relatable, struggling with an unbearable need to be loved but a complete inability to realize the need for it to be reciprocated. It's why Pinkerton isn't misogynistic so much as confused: "No Other One" classically mistakes hating yourself for loving someone else, and "El Scorcho" reminds that fictional RomCom behavior is actually borderline sociopathic in real life. In fact, the songs most likened to cuddly Blue Album Weezer are the darkest-- "The Good Life" is Cuomo at the end of his rope, hysterical at the ridiculousness of his self-loathing, while a single line in "El Scorcho" sums up the core of Pinkerton's pain: "I can't talk about it/ I gotta sing about it and make a record." Had Weezer packaged these new-old tracks into a quick follow up to Pinkerton, they may have had a third classic album to go with their first two releases. Cuomo eventually delegated song selection for the album to the band's original A&R rep, Todd Sullivan, saying that Weezer fans chose the "wackest songs". I'd hate for the video to kinda misrepresent the song, or exaggerate certain aspects."[20] The final video featured the band playing in an assembly hall in Los Angeles, surrounded by light fixtures flashing in time to the music.[23] Director Mark Romanek quit after numerous arguments with Cuomo, leaving Cuomo to edit the video himself.[40] The video debuted on MTV's 120 Minutes and received moderate airplay.[20]

  7. The band performed five dates in Japan at the beginning of September and then embarked on what was dubbed the "Troublemaker" tour, consisting of 21 dates around North America, including two in Canada. Angels and Airwaves and Tokyo Police Club joined the band as support at each show, and Brian Bell's "other"band The Relationship also performed at a handful of dates. Shortly before the encore at each show, the band would bring on fans with various instruments and perform "Island in the Sun" and "Beverly Hills" with the band. At a show in Austin, after Tokyo Police Club had played its set, Cuomo was wheeled out in a box and mimed to a recording of rare Weezer demo, "My Brain", dressed in pajamas and with puppets on his hands, before being wheeled off again. This bizarre event later surfaced as the climax to a promo video for Cuomo's second demo album, Alone 2.

After the Pinkerton tour, Sharp left the band and Weezer went on a five-year hiatus.[64] During this time, Pinkerton amassed a cult following, and a wave of mainstream emo bands including Jimmy Eat World, Saves the Day, Dashboard Confessional and Motion City Soundtrack were citing it as an influence.[64] Cuomo was not comforted by this development, and told Rolling Stone in 2001: "The most painful thing in my life these days is the cult around Pinkerton. It's just a sick album, sick in a diseased sort of way."[64] For Weezer's subsequent albums, Cuomo moved to simpler songwriting with less personal lyrics.[80] Rolling Stone described Weezer's 2001 comeback album, the Green Album, as the "anti-Pinkerton", with album art and "squeaky-clean" production that recalled Weezer's debut.[64] Read more For a long time, Cuomo talked about Pinkerton like it was his high school diary, a humiliating reminder of a time when he was unapologetically emotional and corny. The album was written in 1995, a tough year where he underwent surgery for having one leg that was longer than the other. Cuomo started taking painkillers, became obsessed with Puccini, and originally wanted the band to release a science fiction opera titled Songs from the Black Hole as their follow-up to their eponymous debut. Though that idea was put on hold, the music that would go on to become Pinkerton would come from that same dark place. Последние твиты от Pinkerton (@Pinkerton). The album Hurley was released in September 2010 through Epitaph Records. The name comes from the character Hugo "Hurley" Reyes from the television show Lost. Jorge Garcia, the actor who portrayed Hurley, stated that being featured on the album cover is "one of the biggest honors of [his] career."[70][75] Weezer used internet streaming service YouTube as a way to promote the album. Weezer loaned itself to 15 amateur online video producers, "going along with whatever plans the creator could execute in about 30 minutes." The band was promoted through popular channels such as Barely Political, Ray William Johnson and Fred Figglehorn. Despite Pinkerton's mixed reception, in later years it garnered enduring sales, critical acclaim and cult status through internet word of mouth.[75][76] It came to be considered among Weezer's best work by fans and critics.[18][77] In 2011, Weezer recorded a cover of "Rainbow Connection" with Hayley Williams for Muppets: The Green Album, a cover album of Muppets songs which also included OK Go, The Fray, and other contemporary musicians.

  1. It's a hideous record... It was such a hugely painful mistake that happened in front of hundreds of thousands of people and continues to happen on a grander and grander scale and just won't go away. It's like getting really drunk at a party and spilling your guts in front of everyone and feeling incredibly great and cathartic about it, and then waking up the next morning and realizing what a complete fool you made of yourself.[79]

In 2010, the band recorded a cover of "I'm a Believer" for the movie Shrek Forever After.[174] Previously, Weezer had planned to include an early version of "My Best Friend" from Make Believe in Shrek 2, but it was rejected due to the song sounding "too much like it was written for Shrek".[175]
  6. From December 2003 to the fall of 2004, Weezer recorded a large amount of material intended for a new album to be released in the spring of 2005 with producer Rick Rubin. The band's early recording efforts became available to the public through the band's website. The demos were a big hit, but none of the songs recorded at this time were included on the finished album. That album, titled Make Believe, was released on May 10, 2005. Despite commercial success, Make Believe got a mixed reception from critics, receiving an average score of 52 on review collator Metacritic.[55] Although some reviews, such as AMG's, compared it favorably to Pinkerton,[56] others, among them Pitchfork, panned the album as predictable and lyrically poor.
  7. I was a little kid when Pinkerton came out but that’s probably a good thing, as the world didn’t seem to be ready. Rolling Stone readers voted it the third worst album of the year and Entertainment Weekly called it “a collection of get-down party anthems for agoraphobics”. Pinkerton wasn’t a complete flop, but it definitely wasn’t a hit, peaking at number 19 on the charts. Record executives and fans were expecting something closer to the pop rock of Blue, where Cuomo sang about sweaters and Buddy Holly. Pinkerton, in contrast, was overly dramatic and sentimental, loosely based on Madame Butterfly and named after one of the opera’s characters.

Weezer's overlooked second album eventually became a cult favorite and now it's received a deluxe At one point, there seemed as strong a chance of Weezer's making an album as good as Pinkerton.. I suppose that doesn't give the listener enough credit, but we can do away with the idea that Pinkerton is somehow "realer" than other Weezer records. Even if they're more Spike Jones than Spike Jonze these days, it exists on the same continuum as Raditude, Hurley, and yes, even Make Believe-- Cuomo's work has always been driven by a need for approval, and once the Green Album was seemingly spawned by popular demand, he's used his band as an embodiment of that. That their "Memories Tour" is financially backed by AXE appears terribly ironic, but in reality, Weezer are also a brand that realizes striking a chord with boys obsessed with sex gives you a license to print money. By the same token, it gives me comfort that Pinkerton will remain timeless-- its fanbase is the ultimate renewable resource. In November 2010, Weezer released a compilation album composed of re-recorded versions of unused recordings spanning various years, Death to False Metal.[77][78] On the same day a deluxe version of Pinkerton, which includes "25 demos, outtakes and live tracks" was also released.[79] A third volume of Cuomo's solo Alone series, titled Alone III: The Pinkerton Years, consisting of demos and outtakes from the Pinkerton sessions, was released on December 12, 2011.[80] The band also contributed a cover of the Cars' "You Might Think" for the Disney-Pixar film Cars 2.[81] Listen to Weezer Radio featuring songs from Pinkerton free online Facebook Twitter Pinterest El Scorcho Songs like Why Bother? and Getchoo take on the sad, bizarre reality of Cuomo’s life at Harvard, where he was a literal rock star attempting to play the role of a regular college student. In a 1997 issue of Details, he would describe the album as chronicling his “cycle between lame-o and partier”. On one hand Cuomo was a famous musician, on the other, he was rejected from joining the school’s chorus. And though fans would write him love letters from Japan – the inspiration for Across The Sea – he claims to have gone unrecognized by students wearing Weezer T-shirts.

Pinkerton's critical standing continued to rise. In 2002, Rolling Stone readers voted it the 16th greatest album of all time.[81] In 2003, Pitchfork gave Pinkerton a perfect score and named it the 53rd greatest album of the 1990s.[82] In 2004, Rolling Stone gave the album a new review, awarding it five stars out of five and adding it to the "Rolling Stone Hall of Fame".[73] Over the following years, it appeared in best-of lists by publications including Spin[83] and Drowned in Sound.[84] By August 2009 it had sold 852,000 copies in the US[85] and was certified gold.[86] In 2016, almost 20 years after its release, it was certified platinum for sales of over one million copies in the US.[87] After signing to Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer released its self-titled debut album, also known as the Blue Album, in 1994. Backed by music videos for the singles "Buddy Holly", "Undone – The Sweater Song", and "Say It Ain't So", the Blue Album became a multiplatinum success. Weezer's second album, Pinkerton (1996), featuring a darker, more abrasive sound, was a commercial failure and initially received mixed reviews, but achieved cult status and critical acclaim years later. Both the Blue Album and Pinkerton are now frequently cited among the best albums of the 1990s. Following the tour for Pinkerton, bassist Matt Sharp left the band and Weezer went on hiatus. Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992. Since 2001, the band has consisted of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, lead guitar, keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums), Brian Bell (guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), and Scott Shriner (bass, backing vocals).

Seems like Weezer are continuing that trend of making fans feel happy and nostalgic with their releases, as opposed to confused Pinkerton - Deluxe Edition Tracklist: Disc One: Pinkerton: 01 Weezer recorded their debut album with producer Ric Ocasek at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.[7][8] During the recording, Cropper was fired, as Cuomo and Sharp felt he was threatening the band chemistry. He was replaced by Brian Bell.[6] During a Beats 1 interview by Zane Lowe on Apple Music on January 24, 2019, Cuomo announced that Weezer had already recorded the "basic tracks" to the follow-up album to the "Black Album". The album is being produced by Jake Sinclair, who produced the "White Album". Cuomo said the songwriting for the album is piano-based, and that some songs have string parts already recorded at Abbey Road Studios. For the recording process, Weezer departed from the modern "grid music" style (music recorded via modern software using grids to organize and manipulate the individual elements of recorded music) and did not perform to a "click" (i.e., metronome) for a more natural style.[121] Cuomo said the album is tentatively titled "OK Human" and that the inspiration for the album is the 1970 album Nilsson Sings Newman. Furthermore, Cuomo said he is currently working on an album with the working title "Van Weezer" that harkens back to their heavier rock sound after noticing how crowds go nuts for big guitar solos at Weezer shows.[122][123] Weezer T-shirt: Pinkerton.
