A native of Glenageary, Co. Dublin, Sinead had a troubled childhood. Unfortunately she will be most remembered by many, not for her on stage talent and amazing vocals, but for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II while appearing on Saturday Night Live. Frank Sinatra, once threatened to “kick her ass” for refusing to let the American National Anthem play before her show in New Jersey. Stating she does not allow any national anthems play before her concerts, Sinead was never one to shy away from controversy.Copyright © 2020 HubPages Inc. and respective owners. Yes, we all know that Bono can be a pretentious prig, and in recent times some of U2’s work has been overblown, to say the least. But there can never be any doubt that this an all time great band, who have given us some of the most electrifying music of the past few decades. When they played the song Bad, I had chills down my spine from the combination of Adam Clayton’s bass, Larry Mullen Jr.’s drums, the Edge’s (David Evans’) lead guitar and Bono’s (Paul Hewson’s) raw emotional vocals. From that moment on I was, and will forever be, a U2 fan. Trying to choose a favorite album and song is almost as difficult as choosing a favorite child. The Unforgettable Fire, Walk On, New Year’s Day and One are special to me, but the live version of Bad is extra special and brings me right back to Croke Park, 1984.One thing you have to say about Irish rock is that it’s never lacked for great characters. But there’s so much more to the Derry band that one song. For close on a decade from 1974, The Undertones combined new wave, glam, garage and rock’n’roll in a fashion that led to a whole host of copy bands in the province. But none had the quality of frontman Feargal Sharkey and the rest of the line-up, which stayed constant throughout this period. Their first two albums, The Undertones and Hypnotised, are full of glorious moments and stunningly constructed songs. Reuniting in 1999, 16 years after splitting up, they’re still touring, albeit without Sharkey. Although not necessarily a "celtic" band, ETH has molded together the sound of multiple genre rock and melodious folk tunes. Known for their fiery live shows andhard-driving instrumentals, ETH has recently been important for writing numerous non-punk political numbers, and their newest album Soapbox Heroes has only one instrumental song on the entire CD. Fronted by...well...all the members, ETH has what is arguably the best fiddler in the industry and also the best bagpiper to boot. With every member having a powerful style and talented ability, this band is not one to let musicianship slide in the name of popularity. At one point they had been compared to the Pogues, but that was when they first started recording as the Oysterband in 1988 with "Wide Blue Yonder", and that endevour even proved to be more refined. Their lyrics are deeper than most folk musicians, which consequently are considerably deeper than pop musicians. Lets not be so conservative and mainstream folks, we are talking about irish folk rock after all. though i love all these bands as much if not more being part of my culture we should widen the spectrum and really dig for the unfound music, i would also like to mention that none of you mugs mentioned the wolfetones.Dubliners belong at #1 as are the source of all the pogues, dropkicks, molly's etc. U2 prob don't belong on the list but in the early days they had an "Irish" hint mixed with American rock which made them fresh for the time. It's hard to recognise as "Irish" anymore though due to their popularity, influence, and mainstream appeal so yeah I'd say they don't belong here. Seriously though, Dubliners belong at 1, pogues at 2, then murphies, molly's etc, all in terms of popularity and influence, not to mention longevity and album sales!!No need to gripe as I am more than aware of celtic music being diverse and far reaching. Even has roots in middle eastern music, like the bouzouki.

They're a good band but they're not even in the same league as the Pogues and the Dubliners. Around this time, Horslips broke through initially with their experimental version of Celtic rock. They were possibly the first Irish based rock band to enjoy success in Europe without relocating to London, or the States. While they became huge at home, and toured extensively in the United States and England, super star status eluded them. They came together in 1970 and within a decade had broken up with Johnny Fean and Eamonn Carr forming the Zen Alligators, a short lived rock n' soul band that toured the ballrooms. Recently though, they have made a string of appearances together with talk of a reunion in the works. The Beat groups of the 60's played the same gigs, created the same stir, but just went by a different name than groups in the 70's. Outside of Dublin, there were few venues for rock groups and any original music was naturally compared to the rock gods of the era. Recording was an expensive proposition and few bands had the "bread" to record at Trend studios, or one of the handful of Dublin's other professional studios. Founded in Dublin in 1969 by Phil Lynott and his school friend Brian Downey, Thin Lizzy was named after the nickname for the Ford Model T (The Tin Lizzy). With Lynott as lead singer, they went on to record 13 hard rock albums. It’s hard to listen to any classic rock radio station in the USA or Europe and not hear one or two Thin Lizzy songs. With hits like The Boys are Back In Town, Waiting For An Alibi, Jailbreak, Whiskey In The Jar, Thin Lizzy were a big hit amongst Irish people. So like many band names, it just sounded good at the time. And in passing, Paul Hewson named himself Bono after a sign advertising Bono Vox hearing aids (Bono Vox means beautiful voice in Latin).. I had to pop over for a visit after you made it to my site. And lo and behold you have a list of some of my favorite bands, of course U2 is my fave and I have to agree with the call on Bad (live) one of the best. We (hubby and I) saw them this past summer in Baltimore as the Montreal concert was rescheduled during our summer holidays, thankfully they were playing close by. Each time I hear them play live I am moved.
Doesn’t everybody love Thin Lizzy? Is there anyone who doesn’t admire them? The only argument is about their best period. Some might laud Jailbreak or Johnny The Fox as their finest albums, while others will rave about Black Rose. And still more admire Thunder And Lightning. Even Vagabonds Of The Western World has its protagonists. And Live And Dangerous has long been hailed as an all time classic live album. We all recognise Lynott’s genius as a lyricist, musician, singer and performer. But any band who can boast Brian Downey, one of rock’s most astute drummers, plus a selection of guitarists like Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, John Sykes, Eric Bell and Scott Gorham… it’s no wonder Lizzy’s reputation and influence is so pervasive. Band The ones that are actually irish (aka, from fekkin' ireland) are not necessarily "contemporary" (as one critic has already stated below). Let's define contemporary: I have defined it as anything post modern, aka, past the roaring 20s. Really, music drastically changed starting in the 1950s. That's when some of these bands got started. 62 years is not a long time, therefore, yes, they're contemporary by definition. The Belfast born artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, George Ivan Morrison or “Van” has been a staple in Irish music since the late ’50’s. His blend of soul, blues, jazz, Irish, folk, country and a subtle bit of gospel, combined with his unmistakably commanding voice, create his unique sound.ps. Oysterband would probably say they are 'British' and for the fussy, they have a Welsh lead singer and a Scottish fiddle player. So I think that counts, plus they have played many Celtic festivals. This Limerick band exploded onto the pop/rock scene in the early 90’s with their first album Everybody Else Is doing It, So Why Can’t We? Churning out hit after hit like Dreams, Linger, I Can’t Be With You, Ridiculous Thoughts and Zombie, The Cranberries were Ireland’s top band for many years. Singer Dolores O’Riordan’s thrashy vocals mix with the Hogan brothers’ grungy guitars and Fergal Lawlor’s drums to strike the right chord. They have sold millions of their singles and albums worldwide. The Cranberries are currently finishing their 6th album, which is due to be released in 2012, entitled Roses.

Their unique sound of eclectic influences, mixed with an obvious Celtic folk foundation, catapulted their music onto the European charts and into the hearts of Irish people. It is a bit of a stretch to pigeon hole them by calling them strictly a rock band. Despite their unconventional instruments such as tin whistle, flute, fiddle, accordion, harmonica, piano, mandolin, and bouzouki, there is a definite rock beat in most of their songs. The band has had many directional changes over the years. Every album they produce is different from the last. Happily Mike Scott and The Waterboys are still going strong today. The history of Irish rock music is quite amazing given the parochial attitudes and lack of creativity generally during the 60's In Dublin and Belfast, before the rock bands there were the Beat groups Rock and roll, style of popular music that originated in the United States in the mid-1950s and that evolved by the mid-1960s into the more encompassing international style known as rock music.. To me The Pogues were the greatest Irish Rock band, if they were a rock band at allThe band that launched Van Morrison’s career, Them were only around for a short period of time from 1964, but made such an impression that The Doors always cited them as a big influence. The combination of R&B, pop and Irish show band roots gave Them a highly individual sound, with Billy Harrison’s guitar and Peter Barden’s keyboard playing as important as Morrison’s vocals. Even though they carried on after the frontman quit to go solo in 1966, it was while he was with Them that they made a significant impact. Whether with Taste or his own band, Rory Gallagher was a fluent, fluid guitar master. Certainly one the elite musicians of the 70s and 80s. He had a blues base, from which he extended his craft to include celtic, folk and other styles And let’s not forget that he had an impressive voice and was a consummate songwriter and band leader. Always at his best in a power trio set up, he has inspired such talents as Slash and The Edge. When you listen to what he did on albums such as Deuce, Blueprint, Tattoo and Irish Tour ‘74, it’s not hard to understand why his stature has endured long after his death in 1995.
There's really nothing else to add here other than the Cranberries are classified pop. They aren't remotely folk and this is not an irish music hub. I may make a list of irish bands of all time, and that would pretty much exhaust ireland's list of popular acts in the last century (and not novelty acts like the Irish Rovers, which to me are funny but merely another carbon copy of the Dubliners/Clancy Brothers mentality, and at least the Dubliners had some real balls).Other honourable mentions I've listed in comments in the past years. Saw Doctors (another personal favorite that isn't quite folk enough to make it here) is another example. An iconic band of their time, The Pogues are one of the most famous irish punk rock bands who had popular hit with Chirstmas song The Fairytale of New York' Duncan – It’s so difficult to narrow a list down to just ten. For six years from 1977, Stiff Little Fingers were the true essence of punk anger. Born from the heart and soul of the Northern Ireland troubles, they were fuelled by a rage that was genuine and inbred, rather than the papier mache gimmickry of so much in punk at the time. But to this spirit was added a tremendous sense of musicality. It ensured that their early albums, in particular Inflammable Material and Nobody’s Heroes, have more than stood the test of time. And their message is still clear and relevant. The band reunited in 1987, five years after breaking up. But it’s those early days that defined the Fingers legacy. Kids Encyclopedia Facts. The Dubliners formed in 1962 and consists of members out of Dublin, hence the name. The Dubliners are known for a few things vital to the celtic music scene, especially modern. First, they were officially the pioneers of the irish music scene in Europe, actually achieving a few songs on the top 100 charts in the UK. They have juggled members throughout the years, notably Paddy Reilly (who went on to a successful solo career). The current lineup has only two original members, and it's terribly difficult to follow the band through its history. That part of the band can be found on wikipedia. Last Bandits 2xLP Record Store Day 2018 reissue It's blink and you missed it time again. The Last Bandits discography has been remastered and reissued as a double-LP set with one previously unreleased track by Seventeen Records (UK) as part of Record Store Day 2018. It's credited to Nikki Sudden, Johnny Fean & Simon Carmody, reflecting the labels primary interest, i.e. issuing Nikki Sudden's rarities. It's debateable whether it should be credited like this as the Angels Are Calling EP and the xmas single were both credited as Last Bandits releases. The accompanying press release tends to exaggerate the 'lost' nature of the album but its good to see it available again . . . though it's possibly sold out at source now. Still plenty of copies available online including discogs last time I looked. The first major breakthrough band in Ireland was "Them," featuring the the legendary Van Morrison. Formed in 1964, they were from Belfast which was official part of the UK and so they are often not thought of as an "Irish" band. It would be 1967 when a blues guitarist and former showband musician struck out in a new direction that Ireland would have it's first rock stars. Rory Gallagher was the guitarist and Taste was the band that rivaled even guitar god Eric Clapton's Cream for fans. Taste broke up in 1970 with Rory starting his own international solo career as one of the world's greatest guitarists. I have been MIA for far too long I see.
